Eid Holiday for Students in Bayonne, NJ

The Issue

Muslims celebrate two holidays that are important to them, Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr. These Holidays signify the end of the holy month of Ramadan (in which people fast from dawn till dusk) and the end of the pilgrimage known as Hajj. For many years, citizens and students from the Muslim community have requested that whenever these days fall on an instructional day, it should be given as a day off when schools and administrative offices are closed.

The Bayonne Muslim Community believes that every student in Bayonne should have the right to observe their religious holidays without fear of academic penalty. As such, we are calling on the City of Bayonne to recognize Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as official holidays for Muslim/Non-Muslim students in the public school system. By recognizing these holidays, Bayonne will be demonstrating its commitment to diversity and inclusion, and sending a message of acceptance and respect to Muslim students and families.

This is one, but the the only, way to show the slogan in the Bayonne Board of Education "The Youth of Today. The Leaders of Tomorrow". The ultimate goal of the Bayonne Community is to bring diversity into classrooms and schools. Being able to allow all students to celebrate this holiday with an excused instructional day will help spread the message of diversity and multicultural knowledge across many families and students education.

By signing and supporting this petition, we, as a community, will be able to publicly express our concern regarding the lack of recognition of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as official holidays for Muslim students in the city of Bayonne.
