Egypt also condones the barbaric, brutal and vicious DOGFIGHTING where betting, wagering and gambling take place and dogs tear each other to shreds fighting to the death often in front of small children who witness this at FRIDAY MARKETS in CAIRO and ALEXANDRIA and GIZA PYRAMIDS AREAS of EGYPT. STRYCHNINE POISON is fatal to both humans and animals and poisoning can occur through inhalation, swallowing, or absorption through the eyes. STRYCHNINE POISON produces some of the most painful symptoms of any known neurotoxin reaction. Minutes after exposure, the body’s muscles begin to spasm, starting with the head and neck. The spasms then spread to everywhere else in the body, with convulsions that get worse at the slightest stimulus. The convulsions are so strong that they cause the back muscles to arche continually. Death is caused by suffocation, asphyxiation (paralysis of the neural pathways that control breathing), or by exhaustion from convulsions. It causes excruciating pain and extreme distress to the animal. The animal cannot control his muscles. He is helpless to even move. This is a torture death with no mercy.

Homeless dogs that are starving searching for food in the streets are being brutally poisoned to death by Egyptian government agents. Dogs are also SHOT TO DEATH by Egyptian government agents. DOGFIGHTING goes on while the government takes no action to stop it. It is heinously cruel and often young dogs and puppies are torn to shreds for dogs to practice and train. Kittens and cats also are often tossed to starving dogs in hopes they will maul them to death by dogs forced to participate in dogfighting. The conditions at Friday Market where dogfighting occurs are filthy, disgusting, and the animals have no food or water. These actions represent a systematic, brutal, and indiscriminate approach to dealing with homeless animals. Despite pressure from animal rights and welfare organizations, as well as tourists shocked by the cruelty, the Egyptian government has adamantly turned a deaf ear to calls for change. We call on the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities , General Veterinary Authority, the Ministry of Agriculture, Egyptian Public Prosecution, Ministry of Interior and Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency to stop this brutality and murderous extermination of dogs and condemn dogfighting and shut down Friday Markets and stop any and all use of strychnine poison! The Egyptian government provides no resources for the care and treatment of dogs whatsoever. There is no Animal Protection Act or strict Animal Welfare Laws protecting dogs. There is no government sponsored spay and neuter programs.
The need for a humane, ethical and responsible approach to stray dogs in Egypt is clearly evident. SPAYING AND NEUTERING are effective methods of controlling the animal population. Rather than purchasing lethal poisons, funds should be redirected to sterilization programs. The current situation is absolutely untenable. It is time for the Egyptian government to take decisive action to protect animals from cruelty, abuse and torture.
