Our country needs education loan repayment reform in a big way, so I have sent the letter below to the President and now I am reaching out to my fellow Americans to help spread the word that reform needs to happen. Please join me in spreading this message. I don't mind paying back my loans, however; those payments should not make it impossible to provide for my family after they are made each month. So I just sent this letter to the White House. Mr. President, I am writing to you about my concerns with federal education loan repayment. I feel as though this process is severely flawed and as such has made it almost impossible for average Americans to repay their loans in a timely manner without seriously affecting their ability to provide for their families. As it stands now, the process of repayment is based solely on the size of your family and your gross monthly income, however; this is not realistic. The current system does not consider any outside circumstances such as expenses needed to maintain that income or maintain a suitable household for that family. For instance, I am a single mother of 2 small children, I have a single income, a car payment so I can work to feed my family and a house payment so I can house my family. In addition, I have regular standard monthly bills along with several medical bills due to incurable autoimmune disorders, yet none of that is considered. I cannot file for disability because honestly, I wouldn't make enough to support my children and I want to work as long as my body allows me to, however; as it stands now, my payments would be more than 25% of my total monthly income take home. I ask you Mr. President, how can I support my children when my loan payments cost almost twice my car payment? Why does the government seek to make it impossible to get an education without signing your life away to debt? If I were told when I went to college that repayment would jeopardize my ability to take care of my children, I would not have gone. I did not sign up to be in debt for life, I signed up to better myself for my childrens sake. Reform needs to happen and people like myself and hundreds of thousands of others need more realistic assistance during repayment and guidance before signing up for a lifetime of debt.
