Racism and systemic racism in ontario schools is a huge problem that the Ontario Ministry of Education does not acknowledge. POC creators are extremely underrepresented in classrooms, making Black and other POC students feel excluded in their own schools and communities. It’s our responsibility change this and acknowledge the fact that the ontario education curriculum not only honours racist scientists, but makes ZERO effort to help Black and non-black POC students feel safe, as a lot of racist students and racist remarks go untreated and get little to NO punishment. It’s time to start discrediting and stop honouring racist creators in history (like Christopher Colombus) by excluding them from the curriculum, and start honouring and celebrating Black and other POC excellence by incorporating more POC scientists and contributors into classrooms (like Elijah Mccoy and Hanrietta Lacks).Another mandatory step to this would be to hold educational assemblies teaching students aboutBlack and other POC history and and why racism is not acceptable and will not be tolerated in schools.Only then will we, the students start to believe and feel that schools also care about the students that have a different skin tone than white.
