The Issue

Growing up in Puerto Rico, the song of the coquí frog is as familiar and comforting as a gentle breeze. The coquí isn’t just a species on our island—it’s a profound part of our identity, woven into our memories and cultural roots. Its nightly serenade serves as a reminder of home, cherished childhood moments, and family gatherings. To hear a coquí is to be embraced by the spirit of Puerto Rico.

However, the habitat of this beloved and iconic species is under threat, primarily due to uninformed actions by visitors to our island. Many tourists, unaware of the ecological significance and the fragility of the coquí’s environment, unknowingly contribute to the disruption of its natural habitat. If left unchecked, this could lead to detrimental impacts on the ecosystem and, ultimately, the loss of a vital piece of our cultural heritage.

Our solution is straightforward yet impactful: implement the distribution of pamphlets or guides to every tourist visiting Puerto Rico. This guide would detail the island's unique ecology and highlight the importance of the coquí, not only to our environment but also to our cultural identity. It would educate visitors on how to engage respectfully with the environment, providing simple yet effective ways to support preservation efforts, such as sticking to marked trails or reducing noise pollution in sensitive areas. To ensure every tourist learns about the coquí and its importance, we could distribute a small, informative pamphlet at key points across the island. This could include airports and ferry terminals, hotel lobbies and welcome kits, car and tour rental offices, visitor centers, and popular cultural or ecological sites. By placing the pamphlet where tourists naturally arrive and explore, we can make sure that everyone has the chance to understand the coquí’s role in Puerto Rico’s ecology and culture, and how to help protect it.

The opportunity to educate everyone who sets foot on our island is a crucial step toward ensuring these cherished frogs continue to thrive for generations. Visitors who understand and value the significance of the coquí are more likely to act responsibly to protect it.

Join us in safeguarding the coquí and honoring a symbol of Puerto Rican culture by supporting the introduction of educational guides for tourists. Let us ensure that future generations can experience the same sense of identity and belonging that comes from hearing the call of the coquí. Sign the petition today.
