EDGE HILL UNIVERSITY STRIKE COMPENSATION

The Issue

As with numerous other Universities across the country, Edge Hill University are set to take part in strike action spanning 4 weeks. We are therefore urging our University to compensate us £863.33 for the 14 days of strike action between Thursday 20th February and Friday 13th March.

We pay £9250.00 per year for our University Studies, equating to roughly £36 per contact hour for my particular course (this will differ per student). Meaning potentially missing up to £972 worth of contact time. We are asking for this amount to be compensated!

Students in their final year of study are missing out on key lectures, supporting their dissertation and final year exams. As a third year student I and others are likely to miss out on crucial contact hours and dissertation supervision across this period that can have a detrimental effect on the ability to attain predicted and aspirational grades.

We have already encountered a period of strike action already this academic year which resulted in a need for exam changes, module topics being removed from specifications and a monumental impact to the level of learning being achieved within departments.

Although some deadlines have been extended and means put in place to minimise disruption this is simply not satisfactory as we require the one to one teaching that we pay for!

We stand by the tutors and their concerns over pay and conditions. We urge the University to resolve this ongoing issue.
