Time to listen to #WinterbournesWarning

My son, Simon, spent 15 months in Winterbourne View Assessment and Treatment Unit where he was repeatedly abused and neglected. His suffering and that of others was only exposed by a BBC Panorama investigation. Watching it  broke my heart.

Before his admission to Winterbourne, Simon was living in a small care home near to our house. He was a well-known and loved part of the community. But social services would not fund the level of support he needed. Without this, things broke down for Simon and that’s when Simon was sent to Winterbourne View.

After his terrible ordeal, Simon was able to return to the community that he loved. Although this was an unbelievably happy occasion after everything our family had been through, Simon has never been the same since.

What happened at Winterbourne View shone a light on a system that is not working. A system that sees many people stuck in inpatient units at risk of abuse. Sending someone with Simon’s needs away to a unit can never be justified.

I now consider Simon to be one of the lucky ones. There are thousands of other people, like Simon, who are still stuck in units, and families, like ours, fighting to get them home.

Since Winterbourne, we have been made promise after promise that things will change, that such places would be closed. That people would be given the right support, near their families. Promise after promise has been broken.

With the General Election approaching, I want to remind the main party leaders of the promises that have been made and, with your help, make sure the next Government keeps them. That’s why I got involved with the Hear my voice campaign.

One of the three main party leaders will be the next Prime Minister, it is up to them to make sure every family, like mine, is heard and can see change. Please sign my petition for the sake of Simon, and the many others at risk of being lost in the system.

Thank you for your support,

Ann, Simon’s Mum
