EC1VOICES: SAVE THE FOOTBALL PITCHES & OPEN SPACE (Finsbury Leisure Centre)

The Issue

"You’re building flats everywhere but there’s no infrastructure for these kids.”

We are fighting for everyone facing the loss of community facilities, overdevelopment and attempts to ruin quality of life all over London. Bunhill is one of the most densely populated boroughs in London. Islington Council are consulting on new proposals for the Finsbury Leisure Centre site after having two proposals to build housing on the site rejected by the local community over the last 10 years. Islington council are trying to build high rise flats on one of the last remaining open spaces.

"The council are decimating the community. We live in an area with tower blocks and estates full of children and none of these have access to outside space and our parks are not safe any more."

What we are fighting for:

  • the football pitches to remain open for all
  •  space for our children, this is one of the last open spaces in Bunhill
  • the environment, light levels, mature trees
  • residents facing fuel poverty given the impact of new proposals
  • QUALITY OF LIFE

We defeated them twice and they have come back more determined than ever. Act now to make your voice heard. Sign and share!

Architecturally, the proposed design is destructive to the entire local community, including St Luke's Gardens and Burnhill House within the St Luke’s conservation area. The design is out of scale, forcing Burnhill House and St Luke's Gardens into permanent shadow. As a result, residents of Burnhill House will fall into fuel poverty from a detrimental loss of light. St Luke's Gardens ecosystem will suffer from the flooding of artificial light and the lack of natural light will potentially turn the green space into a mud pit.

Stop Islington Council building on the Finsbury Leisure Centre open space

Demand a community led alternative with better community facilities and no loss of open space.
