The Issue

The reality of our beautiful mountain home is that it creates vast distances between people and the things they need to get by. Whether that distances acts as a barrier to employment, to groceries, to doctor appointments, or to childcare the result is the same: Without a reliable public transportation system things will never get better for the people here.

Citizens lose their lives walking on busy roads with no sidewalk or shoulder, face the hot sun and freezing cold, and more just to do the things they need to do. Moreover, those attempting to carve out a better life here are presented immediately with the need for transportation. If you do not have a car in Eastern Kentucky, you cannot support yourself in any meaningful way. If you do have a car here, you are no stranger to helping your fellow people when you can by giving them a ride from place to place.

What public transportation does exist here is unreliable, outdated, and quite frankly hard to use. We need a regularly running bus system, or investment into demand responsive transportation. It is far past time that with all the transportation spending that the state of Kentucky prides itself on, that the lowliest amongst us get a bone thrown our way.
