A1079 Pocklington to York cycle path

The Issue

Cycle path on the A1079:

The A1079 is a main arterial road through the East Riding of Yorkshire. The road serves a number of villages and has a high casualty rate. There have been more than 300 crashes and 20 people have died on the road in the past five years.
In line with the current environmental crisis I believe reducing cars on the road would not only be a huge achievement for air pollution but also make the commute for so many safer and more enjoyable.

Evidence from Transport for London suggests that roads with high quality cycle infrastructure are five times more efficient at moving people than a standard traffic lane.

Evidence from the UK and abroad has demonstrated that the most effective way of getting people cycling is to create full networks of cycle infrastructure – so that people are either separated from traffic or only expected to integrate when volumes and speeds are low enough.
My suggestion is a proper 3m+ lane on one side with both direction of cycle traffic, that would be separate from the road with safe planned crossings. At the very least where paths already exist on the A1079 allow dual use for cyclists and pedestrians. Initially this cycle lane will connect Pocklington to York.

This will mean:

  • Anyone that lives in Pocklington (and around) that works in York can safely cycle there and back saving thousands a year in transport costs (benefitting the lowest paid workers most)
  • Anyone that lives in Pocklington (and around) that needs or would like to get to York for commuting can get there and back
  • Tourists can see and travel safely along these tracks
  • Families can ride for pleasure

The more we get involved the more we can influence. I have started this petition to show the council how beneficial a cycle path on the A1079 would be. Please sign to show your support - as it stands they do not see that cycling has any votes, but if we can show it has massive benefits for people's quality of life we can make a difference....Good luck...
