Good morning from a bright Giffnock,
In many ways, this picture captures the history of Giffnock and the extent of what we have achieved. It was taken 70 years ago on what is now the upper football pitch - breadth ways - looking down to the lower playing field.
In the background you can see the flooded area, which was later reclaimed. In 2021, it finally gained council approval to be given the same legal protection as the upper playing fields. Legally, it can be argued that we have doubled the size of the original park - that doesn't happen much, but it happened right here in Giffnock. That was thanks to you and others in our community acting together for our common good.
In the foreground, my dad, the future two time provost, Allan Steele MBE, can be seen. Thankfully this was schoolboy horseplay, but he later took many on the chin (metaphorically) in standing up for our area. Being a local councillor is a tough job if done well. He was very happy when I told him what we had achieved by working together as one.
Here in our local community, we can do more by acting together than we ever can do by acting apart. We have proved that and there is a lot more to be done to preserve and promote our great community.
