East Marlborough PA -Proposed Tax Increase 124% (more then Double) Need ACT by DEC 1 2024

East Marlborough PA -Proposed Tax Increase 124% (more then Double) Need ACT by DEC 1 2024
The Issue
IMPACTED RESIDENTS: All Chester County PA, East Marlborough Township Residents (Total ~8000 people)
WHAT IS AT STAKE: Proposed 2025 Property Tax Increase 124% (more then double). If you are paying $2000/year today, you will be paying $4480 next year. An increase of $2480/year (+124%).
WHY IS NOW TIME TO ACT: East Marlborough board of supervisors has preliminarily approved 2025 property tax increase of 124% during Nov 4 2024 board meeting after strong objection from residents in attendance and on-line video conference. The township board has signaled that they may formally approve the 124% increase at the next township meeting on DEC 2 2024 at 7PM.
This tax proposal will detrimentally affect individual residential income and negatively impact future property values by putting a dramatically larger tax burden on homeowners in this township. The proposed budget increases the revenue by almost $2Million over the increase in projected costs. A report by the treasurer highlighted that there is already nearly $7Million surplus in the township coffers, which is also extraordinary. The township should not be banking excess revenue at the expense of residents in the community. A more fiscally sound approach would be to challenge expenditures related to higher expenses (emergency services, etc.) and/or develop alternative solutions (pay as you go services, etc..).
In addition, the budget has a significant capital investment for the waste water (sewer) system, using general funds rather than doing what most townships do, which is issue bonds to cover capital expenses.
Other township news: (2) of (5) elected East Marlborough Board Supervisors have resigned this year with "effective immediately designations". The remaining board members have subsequently appointed their replacements.
