Stop The Rental Registry
Nov 20, 2015
A standing-room only crowd of more than 300 people packed the Public Hearing at the American Legion Hall in Amagansett last night. Forty-five speakers voiced their opinions on the proposed Rental Registry Law to the Town Board.
A representative for StopTheRentalRegistry.com presented the Supervisor and Town Board with a petition backed by 1,325 supporters to Stop The Rental Registry in East Hampton along with 315 letters containing comments made by the petition signers.
In the spirit of an old-fashioned town meeting, Supervisor Larry Cantwell called for a show of hands in favor of, and then against, the proposed Rental Registry Law. Those against a Rental Registry outnumbered proponents by a strong 5:1 margin.
It was one year ago, in November 2014 that the community said NO to a rental registry law. Our community has not changed its mind. Opinions on both sides of the issue were in agreement that over-crowded housing and disruptive share-houses are problems that need a resolve. A predominate opinion was that better code enforcement of existing laws is necessary.
What's next? The Town Board is continuing to weigh public opinion. If you have not voiced your opinion to them, now is the time to be heard. Take a few minutes and email the Town Board your opinion or write a letter. Town Board contacts are on our website: StopTheRentalRegistry.com
