Early Childhood Educators, Wages and Professional Development Support

The Issue

Childcare is an important aspect for children development. Therefore, making it accessible for parents and families is crucial. But insufficient public fund is impacting the full realization of childcare benefits. As future Early Childhood Educators and professionals in the childcare field, we are aware that insufficient public funding is not only affecting the fees that parents pay, but also the availability of trained professionals and childcare centres. Therefore, it is important that we as educators to voice the problem and the suggested solutions.

We have noticed that educators are not given appropriate wages although they work hard and honour their demanding jobs. A study by Centre for the Study of Living Standards [CSLS] has shown that a wage increase of 25% can help bring more qualified ECEs into the field and keep them from leaving (2024). A lot of educators quit the job and move from the Early Childhood Education field to another for the sake of not having livable wages that can let them live comfortably in today’s economy.

The Solution

1-      On a federal and provincial level, childcare hourly pay should increase at minimum of 15% to enable childcare professionals to maintain their jobs and attend to their life needs.

2-      More childcare spaces/centres should be built in communities where they are most needed. A fair pricing system should be created so that all families can afford care. No family should be forced to choose between working and caring for their child. At the same time, better support must be given to educators, including mental health resources and opportunities for professional growth.

3-      Professional training to be accessible and frequent to experienced and young educators to enhance their efficiency and the understanding of ECE foundation.

The Call to Action

1-      FEDERAL Level: Support the increase of public funding to support wages increase. Honour the CWELCC system fully and without delay.

2-      PROVENCIAL Level: Financially support the expansion of existing centers and support building new ones. Fair wages must be provided to reflect the education, work, and responsibility carried out every day.

3-      Community level: build awareness about the ECE and family ongoing issue and support the proposed solutions.
