E. T. Richardson Dress Code

The Issue

Hello, today I would like to share about the E.T. Richardson dress code. This dress code is a "typical" school dress code. It bans

  • cropped tops
  • thin shoulder straps
  •  showing bra straps
  • wearing shorts above our fingertips

This dress code is hardly enforced( what does that say about our school?), and mainly targets the girls of the school. The fact that this dress code is even in existence perpetuates the false impression that girls must cover up so that guys are not distracted. How are shoulders and midriffs distracting? Obviously, there is be some line as to where appropriate and inappropriate dress is, but it is not be this strict.

E.T. Richardson claims to be, "an engaging, challenging, and caring learning community...," where ,"...students realize their unique selves, natural and intellectual curiosities, and endless potential." If this dress code stays in place, it will teach young girls to/that:

  • "cover up"
  • be ashamed of their bodies
  •  they are at fault for men's inappropriate advances

In summary, this petition could potentially harm students: teaching girls to be insecure about their bodies , and normalizing perverted thoughts and behavior in your boys.

Thank you so much for considering this petition,
