Petition for Reinstatement of Property and Finances to Unpaid Carers

Hey Everyone,

I hope everyone had a good Easter and isn’t suffering too much from the chocolate rush.

Over the long weekend, we have been tirelessly working on a new petition to call for the reinstatement of property and finances to the 144,000 unpaid carers who are facing severe enforcement action. These carers are in desperate need of our support.

As we are all painfully aware, 50% of unpaid carers who are in employment were not investigated while receiving overpayments of carers allowance. These vulnerable individuals slipped through the net of a broken system that is in desperate need of reformation. More than £250m was mistakenly paid out to unpaid carers who were no longer eligible for the carers allowance benefit. These people, many of whom were struggling to make ends meet, were taken to court for committing fraud to receive payment they were not entitled to. As a result, the Department for Work and Pensions used the proceeds of crimes act to seize their hard-earned life savings, family inheritance, and more.

Our petition is urgently calling on the government to return these ill-gotten gains and to work with unpaid carers to repay the debt at a rate that is suitable to them. These carers need our help more than ever.
