In the face of recent tragedies, the Durham student safety volunteering scheme, most commonly known as the Street Angels, was launched at the end of February this year. On Wednesday nights, volunteers in hi-viz orange vests helped students in a variety of situations, ranging from the expected few who became ill from drinking,  to providing basic first aid to those who had injured themselves, to helping students relocate their friends or return home if they had been thrown out of a club by door staff.

We felt as though we were making a hugely positive impact upon the Durham community, but have been now told that we cannot continue. Our volunteers are trained to deal with minor instances, but are also trained to deal with the worst-case scenario that may occur, and ultimately we question why the University would want to stop a project that keeps its students safe. As a project run for students, by students, it is one of the most effective ways of responding to issues of student safety in Durham.

We don't want to accept the University's decision, and know that the practicalities of running the project are hugely outweighed by the benefits the Street Angels have upon the student community. We would greatly appreciate your support in signing this petition.
