Creation of a zero waste food aisle in Dunnes Stores

The Issue

To Dunnes Stores Head Office,

I used to be a regular customer at Dunnes Stores but recently decided to live a zero waste lifestyle. As a result, I find it hard to keep shopping here as most of the food does not come in a plastic free package. Even most of the fruits and vegetables are excessively and unnecessarily wrapped in plastic.

I am aware of the fact that Dunnes is trying to promote a more healthy, organic and environmental friendly lifestyle by selling gluten free, organic and vegan food, which is great, but I do not support the use of plastic wrapping which is meant for the landfill, especially when it can easily be avoided. I am here targeting dry food, such as rice, beans, flour, pasta, lentils and other, that is wrapped in a plastic film. I would suggest that you create instead a loose food aisle where customers could bring their own bags and containers and pay for the weighed goods. Liquids such as oils, milk and juices should also be available in this new section. Moreover, this would also help to cut down on food waste as customers would only buy the needed quantity.

As many other customers, I feel very concerned about the future of our planet. The use of non recyclable plastic films is not sustainable and you might want to reconsider this wasteful practice. If you truly feel that a wrapping is needed, how about using paper instead? It would not only be recyclable but also compostable as paper is biodegradable.
