We will still meet tomorrow @6pm outside Fairview Park to hug a tree in celebration and appreciation! I hope to see you there.
You may also want to follow up directly with DCC to thank our Councillors for agreeing to save the trees, for listening to us and also to seek clarification on the revised plan on the following topics:
The trees to be felled - is this really necessary? Can the path go around them? Have all options been considered and every effort made to save them?
Safety - cyclists are still mixing with pedestrians, bus passengers, parking spaces and have very little segregation afforded to them.
Space in the park - why is the park not being used when that is where all the space is? Very many people on the petition page consider the park to be the best option.
Traffic Congestion - by reducing Fairview by one lane - it's the arterial route to the city centre for everyone coming off the Malahide, Howth & Clontarf Roads, traffic in the area will be chaotic not to mention dangerous from an access point of view for emergency services. Fairview is also the natural default route to the city centre and Dublin Port if anything ever closes down the Port Tunnel, M50 or M1 motorways. Again, safety is a key concern here.
What is the bigger picture? The revision document is very brief and low on visual images to help us understand what is being proposed. Also, what is the plan for Fairview Park itself? are the beautiful wrought iron railings also safe as a result of this campaign?
Continued positive public engagement - we've seen that people power can work and can be received very positively- let's build on this great momentum together, by properly engaging and listening to all the relevant user groups to reach the best solution for all. The suggestions from the online petition are a great source of alternatives and inspiration. Others have also come up with ideas like having a competition to name the new cycleway and really embrace the whole process. We can continue to work together on this!
