Mandatory Breathalyzers Installed in All Vehicles

The Issue

Every day in Canada, four people die from drunk driving accidents and over 175 people get injured. Worldwide, 270,000 people die every year from impaired driving accidents.

If you get caught, (according to the Right Step Health Company, in America, a drunk driver will drive impaired close to 80 times before getting caught and charged), you will receive a fine for the first offense and possibly jail time for multiple offenses. Based on the stats that I just shared, that means before facing jail time an average drunk driver could drive 160 times impaired. This isn’t the police force's fault, there are just too many cases of drunk driving. SO WHAT CAN WE DO?

Instead of just putting a bandage on this epidemic by charging people with DUI’s or fines, we have to stop this problem before it has the opportunity to occur. What I suggest is to install breathalyzers in every car that is manufactured from now on. Once a breathalyzer is installed, you have to breathe into it and if it detects a higher amount of alcohol than is legal (which in Canada is 0.08%) the car will not start.

The breathalyzers vary in cost, but averages about $120. Ideally, the government would pay for this, but that's unlikely at this time. Perhaps the price of buying a car will go up a little which is a con for many people but it WILL SAVE LIVES. If a new car normally costs $40,000 (average) dollars and a breathalyzer costs around $120.00, then really, that is only a 0.318% increase in cost.

If you sign this petition, it will make my case stronger when I present it to the Premier of Saskatchewan. Please share!
