Thank you so very much for your support. We have just hit 1900 signatures after just 2 days. At a time when the government is clamping down on civil liberties and prosecuting activists doing good work, we can whine and whimper, or we can fight back. Thank you for taking the first step in the stand against repression and sending a message that we may be weak individually, but together, we will not be intimidated. Inculcating change isn’t limited to signing and sharing petitions, though. It requires active and continuous participation from as many citizens as possible, and organising effectively to make that a reality. That is why we’re appealing to you now to start writing, in hard copy or email, to the Prime Minister as well as your elected representatives to let them know your concerns about this case. Below is a sample letter a fellow young singaporean has written to the PM; feel free to customise it to your liking. Remember: if we want change, we all have to stay in this fight, because we are stronger together. I am writing to express my disappointment and dismay at the charges faced by Singaporean activist Jolovan Wham o n 29 November 2017 , for seven alleged offences under the Public Order Act, Vandalism Act and the Penal Code. Jolovan Wham is one of the most courageous and persistent defenders of human rights in Singapore. As an activist, Jolovan has spoken out against detention without trial and has been an untiring and staunch advocate of free speech, as well as for migrant workers who face exploitation and poor working conditions in Singapore. He sought and continues to seek improvement for their work and living conditions. In recognition of the difference he has made in the lives of marginalised people as well as the community, Jolovan was awarded the Promising Social Worker Award by the President of Singapore. Through his work and tireless championing of human rights causes for more than a decade, J olovan has peacefully spoken out in support of the very principles that Singapore was founded upon – liberty and justice for all. I understand the stated rationale for the law that requires prior police permits to hold assemblies so as to prevent potential riots, chaos and violence. Nevertheless, I disagree with the State’s actions in pursuing the seven charges against Jolovan as his events were all peaceful and non-violent. He works for the good of our country, which we are told, aims to be inclusive and which respects diverse voices. He is a constant reminder that we, as a first world country, should strive to attain the standard of human rights enjoyed by other first world countries. As a citizen who believes in our constitutional and universal right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, I stand by Jolovan Wham and his humanistic ideals. In this light, I urge you to consider to - (a) Immediately and unconditionally drop all charges against Jolovan Wham as he has been prosecuted solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly; (b) Repeal or amend all legal provisions that violate the right to freedom of expression and assembly, including Section 7 of the Public Order Act, in order to ensure that genuine and peaceful civil actions like those of Jolovan are not prosecuted by the overly wide provisions of our legislation ; (c) End the penalisation, intimidation and harassment of peaceful activists in our country. Thank you very much. Yours sincerely, (Your name here)
