The Issue

Growing up near the banks of the Nooksack River, I have witnessed the devastation caused by frequent flooding. It is heart-wrenching to see families, farms, and businesses constantly battle the rising waters, losing not just property, but also their sense of security and well-being. The Nooksack River, flowing through Whatcom County in Washington State, is a vital waterway; however, over the years it has become a source of distress due to sediment build-up which has drastically reduced its capacity, leading to frequent floods.

Flooding isn't just an inconvenience; it wreaks havoc on the lives and livelihoods of our community. According to the National Weather Service, the Nooksack River reaches flood stage nearly three times per year on average, with the potential to displace hundreds of families and cause millions in damages annually. This isn't sustainable for any community.

A viable solution exists: dredging. Dredging the Nooksack River will increase its capacity, allowing for better management of water flow and reducing the risk of overflow during peak rainy seasons. This isn't a new concept; successful dredging operations have been implemented worldwide, demonstrating significant reductions in flood frequency and severity.

Whatcom County’s local government can initiate a dredging project alongside state agencies, funded through a combination of federal grants and local community crowdfunding efforts. The project can be meticulously planned to minimize environmental impacts, using modern equipment and techniques that are both effective and eco-friendly.

We cannot afford to wait as flood risks increase. A proactive approach is necessary to protect our homes, our heritage, and our future. By signing this petition, you will urge local and state authorities to prioritize this vital project. It's time we safeguard our community – take a stand, sign the petition, and demand action to dredge the Nooksack River.
