Please see below for a message sent to Downsview & Ancaster residents by MP Roman Baber.

Dear Downsview & Ancaster Residents,

As your (federal) Member of Parliament, I am committed to the safety and well being of all my constituents. That means opposing other levels of government, such as the City of Toronto, when their actions may do us harm.

Without consultation, Mayor Olivia Chow and City of Toronto Staff, decided to build a homeless shelter at 1220 Wilson Avenue (west of Keele, on the north side of Wilson).

The shelter will be located between the St. Theresa Childcare Centre and the Pierre Laporte Middle School. It will bring drugs, crime and chaos similar to that of the Toronto Plaza Hotel shelter, located west of Jane Street.

I am determined to prevent Keele & Wilson from turning into Jane & Wilson, and ask you to support my effort in opposing Olivia Chow and the construction of the Downsview homeless shelter.

This Tuesday, July 15, the City of Toronto's Housing & Planning Committee, will meet at 9:30am, in Room 1, at Toronto City Hall (100 Queen Street West) to consider the re-zoning of the land proposed for the Downsview Shelter and five other proposed homeless shelters in the City of Toronto.

I am confirmed as a speaker at this Committee Meeting and will address the Committee on your behalf. You are welcome to attend in person and try to get yourself on the speaker's list as well, by contacting Toronto City Staff at 416-397-4579.

I anticipate speaking sometime between 9:30am and 11am.

You are also welcome to join me at a press conference with various city councillors and concerned groups at Nathan Phillips Square beginning at 11am.

Here is what you can do to help my effort to oppose the Downsview Shelter before Tuesday:

Forward my petition  No Homeless Shelter at Keele & Wilson  to all of your neighbours, friends, and family in Downsview and Ancaster. The more people sign the petition the more teammates we get to join our efforts. We must show Mayor Chow and Toronto City Council strength in numbers.

Send an email, in your own words, to all members of the Housing and Planning Committee and urge them to vote against the re-zoning this Tuesday!

Their email addresses are:

  • councillor_perks@toronto.ca
  • councillor_nunziata@toronto.ca
  • councillor_bradford@toronto.ca
  • councillor_crisanti@toronto.ca
  • councillor_matlow@toronto.ca
  • councillor_myers@toronto.ca

Call the office of Councillors Frances Nunziata (416-392-4091) and Vincent Crisanti 416-397-9255) and urge them to vote against the re-zoning of the land for the Downsview homeless shelter. I believe Councillor Brad Bradford, may already be on our side.  We need a tie 3-3!

The City is treating the Downsview Homeless Shelter as a done deal. I refuse to allow Mayor Chow run roughshod over Downsview and Ancaster residents. I will not rest until plans for the construction of the Downsview Shelter are abandoned.

I'll be sure to provide an update in the next few days.

In the meantime, let's get to work. Forward my petition, email the Committee Councillors and call Councillor Nunziata and Councillor Cristanti.

I am honoured to represent you in Ottawa.

Yours very truly,

Roman Baber

Member of Parliament
