On 28 April 2020, the newly elected Douglas Shire Council by majority, voted on two motions which threaten the Daintree World Heritage rainforest. Threats to the Daintree flow onto the Great Barrier Reef as the ecosystems are interconnected.

Mayor Michael Kerr has successfully proposed that steps be taken to build a bridge over the Daintree River. This includes suspending an existing contract which would provide a second solar powered ferry across the Daintree.

Mayor Michael Kerr has also successfully propose that Council support a power grid in the Daintree, pledging to provide access to Council property and infrastructure.

Both of these development projects are costly, unnecessary and most importantly, very damaging to the Daintree. There will be more through traffic, pressure to widen the scenic road through World Heritage Areas, huge earthworks, and pressure for further development, including sealing the Bloomfield Track through to Cooktown. 

In the 1970's people-power saved the Daintree from development and led to World Heritage status. Sign the petition to tell Douglas Shire Council we don't want these damaging projects that threaten the Daintree.
