Tarion has been trying to convince people that it has "reformed". But many are not buying that story, including Ontario's NDP.
Here's the email message that CPBH received earlier today that talks about ending Tarion's monopoly and more relating to Ontario's purchasers of newly built homes:
".....Thank you for reaching out. We apologize for our delay in responding and the confusion this has caused. This was not our intention and have outlined our response below.
As you referenced, in 2018 and 2022 the NDP committed to ending Tarion's monopoly. The Ontario NDP shares the concerns of Canadians for Properly Built Homes about the lack of protection for Ontario consumers buying a home, the biggest purchase most people will make in their lives. Our position on Tarion has not changed – we remain committed to ending the monopoly.
The problems extend beyond Tarion, and include deficiencies in the home building inspections system, as well as unfair barriers at the License Appeal Tribunal, where new home buyers must go when Tarion refuses to help them. We remain committed to our position that we would reform the License Appeal Tribunal and make it cheaper and easier for new home buyers to resolve their disputes.
We appreciate CPBH’s advocacy to ensure that new homes comply with the building code. While building code enforcement is the responsibility of the municipalities, we must ensure that new homes comply with the building code.
In addition, an Ontario NDP government would implement a Consumer Protection Watchdog. A core challenge of consumer protection in Ontario at present is that enforcement requires the individual to pursue legal action, or the Ministry to impose a fine on those who violate it. The Consumer Watchdog would hold the power to investigate businesses or other entities on consumer protection laws or practices.
Best,
NDP Policy Team"
Thank you, Ontario NDP!
