Peel Police is not well trained to deal with citizens who suffer from mental health issues, more often than not these citizens end up getting hurt or killed. Between 2000 and 2017 there have been 461 police related deaths and 70 per cent of those deaths were from encounters with people who suffered from mental health or substance abuse issues.

Mental health is a very complex thing to understand, and police are never gonna be able to be fully trained to understand all that needs to be done in order to help those who are mentally ill, it takes years of education and training to be able to understand a bit of the human mind, a bit.

A great example as to how this affects our community is the case of Ejaz Choudry. Ejaz Choudry was a schizophrenic, he was 62 years old when his life got taken away by Peel Police in his apartment in Mississauga in the Malton area. He had a knife but no one around him was at risk, he only threatened to kill himself. The family had called a non-emergency hot line so he could immediately receive medication. Instead they were met with police officers who told them to leave, yelled commands at Ejaz even though it was quite obvious he wasn't in the right state of mind, forcefully opened the door, and shot him.

Peel Police is not well trained to deal with such situations, and there should be another force to be able to help with such situations. Please sign this petition for change.
