Council/Government funding to run a Volunteer Therapy Dog Team - To Visit Special Schools, Nursing Homes etc
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
My name is Dior Wilkinson, fur-mother to @Mocha_ToyChocolatePoodle.
We require on-going financial support from the Gold Coast & Brisbane Councils / The Government to continue a Community Therapy Dog Team
WHY: Therapy dogs can be useful everywhere. Special Schools, Nursing Homes, and anywhere a trained therapy dog can offer assistance in supporting, encouraging, calming people. From helping kids to feel confident to read aloud to their classmates, and assisting children with sensory issues overcome their aversions, to lifting the spirits of the isolated elderly by bringing back happy memories and encouraging them to be active. In detention centres a therapy dog can assist youth in learning to care for an animal, in work places they can help to release stress in the work environment, at charity events they can help to raise money. There are countless places therapy dogs are of great benefit.
HOW IT STARTED: When I rescued Mocha_ToyChocolatePoodle he 11months old. After growing too big and being unwanted anymore with his 1st family he was a welcome addition to his new home with me. I recognised that his calm, affectionate personality was meant to contribute something to the community, so I looked into therapy dogs and found a small group that went to nursing homes, changing lives 1 room at a time. Unfortunately due to the older age of the woman running the group, it had to close down as she was unable to run it anymore.
So I went on a mission to continue the great work. I contacted a dog trainer, who got a charity on board, and we started a new team of volunteers that commenced amazingly- attending special schools, charity events, dog shows, council events etc. Mocha and I have raised thousands for Variety Children’s Charity on Celebrity Variety Island over the last 2 years, and have been anywhere that the team was needed. Unfortunately after 1.5 years funding the group ran out and it had to close down.
Now once again I need to keep it going. This time I want to take full control to try and ensure that we do not let the community down again. There are many people that are waiting for their next visit as they were never warned that the last team was going to be discontinued. There was one man visited in the past who couldn't control his arms until Mocha started visiting him. He was able to learn to pat Mocha calmly and his iPad is full of photos of the therapy dog team members, and is wondering where Mocha is!
Now we need council and government support to make a successful ongoing team. We need financial support to go anywhere and everywhere that people need us.
This is where I ask you to please sign below and comment why you believe this team needs to start up again. Maybe we visit your parents or grandparents in a nursing home where most don't allow residents to have pets, and they miss their pets after having to leave them to go into a nursing home, or your child/niece/nephew/friend that has special needs and a therapy dog can put smile on their face that nothing has been able to for weeks. The list goes on.
We need t-shirts, dog bandanas and jackets, dog shoes and mats, a continuous indoor training location, legal documents made, advertising, ongoing support, a website etc. Council and government funding is crucial to ensure this is viable.
PLEASE HELP US TO HELP OUR COMMUNITY - currently between Tweed Heads and Brisbane, the more support we get further we can go more lives we can help.
While we wait for the council/government to help, you can help me via GoFundMe to get this new team started and once we hit $1,000 I'll start a facebook page for supporters to follow the journey.
