Drug addiction is real and it is in our backyards everyday. We are the victims to drug abuse and the horrific consequences it throws to us and the users. Whether it is a family member, friend, or yourself, we all know someone who has witnessed the power and severity of what drugs can do. According to the national institute on drug abuse, the number of drug overdoes from 2002 to 2016 has skyrocketed from 20,000 to over 60,000 in just 14 years. Heroin overdoses alone went from went from a little over 1,000 in 2002 to over 48,000 in 2016 and is now the most overdosed drug in the US. Kentucky’s office of drug control policy website states “Addiction has reached epidemic levels in Kentucky, where painkiller and heroin abuse are rampant. Kentucky is all to familiar with heroin overdoses. Especially hit hard have been Northern Kentucky, Louisville, and Lexington raising fears that the heroin rage will soon ravage the entire Commonwealth. According to The state of Kentucky’s overdose fatality report around 1,950 people overdosed from an illegal substance in the state of KY. With all of these overdoes healthcare is needed. An average of 193 BILLION dollars was spent on health care those those who self medicate with illegal substances in 2015.
