An open letter to President-Elect Donald Trump
An open letter to President-Elect Donald Trump
The Issue
As the country is reeling from one of the most divisive and exhausting election cycles in our history, there is something I would like to ask you to do that would help us all move towards a genuinely united America. A large portion of the people you are going to be leading are scared. There’s a very real sense that Trump’s America might only be a place for white Americans, and Christian Americans, and straight Americans. This is already starting to play out in hundreds of examples across the country, where people are encountering very visible and bold intolerance. People are saying your name while they threaten an African American woman at a gas station with a gun. People are saying your name while they pull the head scarf off of a Muslim woman waiting on a subway platform. People are saying your name while they physically intimidate women on a bus. There are young children who are threatening other children at elementary schools. We need you to say that this is not acceptable. We need you to ask all Americans to be kind. We need you to say that when you mean to restore the full force of law and order, you don’t just mean to prevent people robbing convenience stores, but also to prevent people from beating up a gay man outside of a club. We need you to say that when you mean to restore religious freedoms, that doesn’t just apply to Christians. Right now, America needs reassurance that it will continue to work for all Americans. It would go a long way towards healing the divide and moving everyone forward if you could say, in no uncertain terms, that American is a term that includes a diverse population with diverse backgrounds and that intolerance is not an American value. Please help us by taking this very simple action and spreading a message of compassion and acceptance. Let everyone know that America belongs to all its people.
