Stop the plan to dump contaminated soil on Carteret wetlands

The Issue

Governor Christie and Mayor Reiman have approved a plan to let a company dump soil contaminated with petroleum onto a wetlands area which is making a comeback after years of being a dumping ground for cyanide-contaminated sludge. The soil will cap six 15-acre impoundments and will rise up to 29 feet high. The sludge lagoons have been characterized by the NJ Department of Enviormental Protection as non-weight bearing. The addition of this heavy, contaminated soil may cause the contents of the sludge lagoons to be forced out into the Rahway River, which will damage these fragile wetlands. The capping of these lagoons also creates the possibility of flooding in towns along the Rahway river in Union County.

The only reason for this project appears to be profit for Soil Safe, the company which treats and disposes of the contaminated soil, profit for Rahway Arch, the owner of the property where the soil will be deposited and possibly profit for Carteret, which may receive fees to allow the plan to proceed.

Please join with me to stop this plan from succeeding. Sign the petition and contact Governor Chris Christie at http://www.state.nj.us/governor/contact/ and Mayor Daniel Reiman at Memorial Municipal Building, 61 Cooke Avenue, Carteret, NJ 07008 (732) 541-3801. Thank you.
