Victims and Families of Victims of Violent Crime Should Have The Right To Appeal Sentence

Victims and Families of Victims of Violent Crime Should Have The Right To Appeal Sentence
The Issue
On February 18th 2015, my son Alexavier Chaz Jennings, 22, was shot to death on John Avenue in Lehigh Acres Florida, located in Lee County. He was killed and his friend was left paralyzed, by a convicted felon. Here is a link to the news story:
My son was a very private person with no social media pages, and one email address. He was a kind and friendly guy, who trusted his associates way too much. I was in the dark about the events surrounding his death. Furthermore it happened in a city in which I did not live, so I was worried about many of the mysteries surrounding his death. Was he targeted? Did he have enemies? I never found the answers. The killer was eventually sentenced to what appears to be a very short 5 year sentence. After doing some studying about Victims Rights, I learned that as the father of a victim of murder, I had no right to appeal the length of the sentence of his convicted killer. As a result of this eye opening experience, I did some soul searching and I want to propose an Executive Order, or at a minimum a Bill that indicates Victims of violent crime and the families of deceased victims of violent crime should have the right to appeal against the sentence of the convicted killer if they believe it wasn't adequate for the crime or not legally correct.
I am currently seeking supporters to help make this change a REALITY.
Thank You,
Steven M. Jennings
