Single Mom Gets 20 Years for Non-violent Drug Offense

Single Mom Gets 20 Years for Non-violent Drug Offense

The Issue

My mother, Stephanie Hatley, was given a 20 year sentence out of the Northern District of Texas. She is a non-violent drug offender, and prior to this had hardly been in any trouble.  My mother was charged with 7399.7 grams of ghost dope, on a conspiracy charge. Those of you who may not know, ghost dope is exactly what it sounds like. It cannot be physically accounted for. It is hearsay. Hearsay from people who were addicts themselves. People who chose to put this on her in order to save themselves from receiving a sentence. I am not saying my mother was a saint, but she wasn’t what she was made  out to be by the federal justice system. My mother is a beautiful human. She is intelligent, kind, compassionate, and would do anything for anyone. Especially someone she loves. Which is how she got in this predicament in the first place. My mother was an addict. She had been through years of abuse. She had witnessed death from the front lines. Self medicating with drugs is how she handled her trauma. With that being said, her conviction has given her the opportunity to get sober, to get healthy. To heal from the things she has gone through.  I would do anything for my mother to be here with me. To be able to witness my son grow up, and not from behind glass or through a 25 minute video call. I know that is all she longs for as well. She is ready to focus on being a mother, a grandmother, and a daughter to my grandmother. The punishment she was given does not match up with the crime that was committed. It is unjust and unfair.  Every life matters.. including inmate lives. Please join me in signing this petition, to take action in fixing a broken system.
