The Issue
Problem
The United States is one of the few countries in the world, that has a minimum legal drinking age of 21. 18 is the legal age of adulthood in the United States. Therefore, adults should have the right to make their own decision on whether or not one chooses to consume alcohol. Decreasing the drinking age would allow young adults to learn how to drink, safely. This also reduces the thrill that underage drinking is "cool", and makes drinking alcohol less of a competition between young adults. This competition could lead to irresponsible behavior, even resulting in death. In countries with a drinking age of 18, there are less recorded accidents and fatalities, involving alcohol. In addition, lowering the MLDA will benefit the economy because there will be an increase in clientele visiting small business bars, and restaurants. In turn, their revenue will increase, and the government will be able to collect greater amounts of tax revenue. Having the MLDA at 21 is pointless because teenagers will consume it regardless. However, lowering the age would allow them to legally consume alcohol, in safe manner.
Solution
Lawmakers need to take action and consider how one small change can make a great difference, for our country. In addition, there should be a greater initiative in teaching young adults how to safely consume alcohol.
Personal story
As a college student, I see first hand the effects of underage drinking. Blackouts, hangovers, injuries, etc. Students risk damaging their bodies, when they could have had experienced drinking in a safe environment while at home, under parental supervision.
