Don't Price Us Out Of Football

The Issue

Let's face it- football is way too expensive to even watch now for us Brits.

I've had enough of paying an extortionate amount of money for Premier League and Champions League coverage that spans only a few matches across different providers: Sky, TNT, and Amazon. The quality from Amazon over the internet is lackluster, TNT's coverage over Sky is also not worth it, and Sky's content feels like a biased taunting of money. We've already had ticket prices increase exponentially, why should we face having to pay any more?

Football has always been a sport for the people: in the olden days the BBC and ITV used to broadcast PL and even UCL matches (and we've always had MOTD to fall back on), however the split in the early '90s stopped that completely with Sky's money hungry powers. Since then, with many different providers having Premier League matches all costing increasingly unjustifiable money to watch year on year, it's become more difficult to watch live on the telly. Why must we foot the most expensive bill to watch our own football too? It's our own league, but some things make us have to pay  even more for less matches than what people in America or Spain get.

Things like the 3pm blackout. While its original intent was to encourage attendance at local games, it now feels obsolete in the digital age, with attendances now constant, money being prevalent, and not requiring a restriction anymore. This prevents lots of us from legally supporting our teams as we have no way to watch the matches other than to risk jail time or pay for a ticket. And this is an even larger problem for teams outside the rich 6, who usually have matches played at this position in the weekend.

And the other elephant in the room is piracy. People, like with music in the 2000s, have to turn to piracy as football is simply too expensive to enjoy casually by fans. Why should we go to prison for supporting our teams? Is it because we aren't giving you enough money?

If the Premier League is an example of the "Beautiful Game", we need to ask broadcasters to make it easier to watch and more accessible for all. What we need to do is:

-Have the Premier League only available on a single subscription service for watching, preferably Sky. However:

-Said broadcaster must not charge extreme amounts of money for watching football; I'd say instead of £90/month for just Sky, it should be ~£20/month or less. If they don't make enough money:

-Get more sponsors: get Barclays as title sponsor, bring back Ford for Super Sunday, or other measures. These sponsorships can supplement broadcast revenue and ensure the PL can be less restricted.

Or even:

-adopt a La Liga-esque streaming service ran by the PL to watch matches.

Football shouldn't be a privilege for the few but a passion for all. Let's demand transparency in pricing and accountability from broadcasters.

Sign this petition to urge Sky, TNT, and other providers to reconsider their pricing strategies and foster a climate where our football is available and accessible to everyone regardless of their financial status.

And make sure to share it to get our voices heard.
