Meta is building one of the largest data centers in the world in Richland Parish, Louisiana—a $10 billion mega-project that will use more electricity each day than the entire city of New Orleans at its summer peak.

To power this one facility, Louisiana utility regulators approved more than $3 billion in new infrastructure, including three new gas power plants and a $550 million transmission line.

Meta will help cover some construction costs—but it won’t pay for long-term operations or maintenance. And much of the financial agreement is sealed behind nondisclosure agreements.

That means Louisiana taxpayers and ratepayers may be left holding the bag for decades.

We, the undersigned, demand that:

• Meta pay the full cost of any power infrastructure built for its exclusive use
• Entergy and the Louisiana Public Service Commission release full, public details of all related contracts and financial terms
• State lawmakers pass safeguards to prevent future deals that allow private corporations to offload infrastructure costs onto the public
   

Other states are taking action. Texas passed a “kill switch” law to limit data center energy use during grid emergencies. Pennsylvania, Oregon, and New Jersey are all developing rules to protect residents from rising costs tied to tech-driven energy demands.

But Louisiana lags behind. While Meta receives massive tax breaks and exemptions, locals in Richland Parish are dealing with skyrocketing housing costs, infrastructure strain, and unanswered questions about long-term community benefits.

Big Tech shouldn’t be allowed to build billion-dollar campuses in rural America and walk away from the power bill.

This isn’t about stopping development. It’s about fairness, transparency, and protecting everyday families from corporate backroom deals.
