At the heart of this petition is an asset to a community. This beautiful and natural site has given the best of life's pleasures. Before the Church bought it, its log cabin was a place of respite for Pepsi executives, the lake fertile ground for fishing and solitude. Wycliffe Church came next and connected the neighborhood with a common interest in a relationship with God. Then, it brought Helping Hands Day campers with special needs together with teen volunteers for two weeks every summer for over two decades. It served the special needs community so well that the City of Virginia Beach then used the old A-frame building to house the Infant Stim Program followed by the Early Intervention Program, who only recently moved out. All of that time, residents of the neighborhood used the playgrounds and parking lot to give their children physical activity, used the nature path around the lake to walk their dogs, and used the Red Bridge to travel to church or the areas restaurants and businesses. This area is an asset also to the Great Neck corridor, as the lake has been used as a natural storm water drainage system since the beginning of time, and later the city installed storm drains and inlets throughout the lake and property. Fortunately for all of the people that have rallied around this site to protect it and to raise awareness about it, the Planning Commission voted to NOT RECOMMEND the application before them to return the property to residential housing. Their recommendation will be heard before City Council on September 19, 2023. Your continued support of this petition is very appreciated. This Change.org platform has requested money from you to support their technology and many have given generously. We however have not asked for any money. If you are inclined to support our efforts financially, you can send venmo to @windy-crutchfield. I will reply to you personally. Thank you for your support of this asset that is so sacred to so many who have been touched by its gifts.
