Don’t Let Florida Forget Parkland—Pass Jaime’s Law

The Issue

After the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018, Florida lawmakers raised the minimum age to purchase rifles and passed “red flag” laws to prevent future mass shootings. But nearly seven years later, Florida’s Legislature has drifted backward—and common-sense gun safety bills like Jaime’s Law aren’t even getting a hearing.

Jaime’s Law is named for 14-year-old Jaime Guttenberg, who was murdered in her classroom in Parkland. Her father, Fred Guttenberg, has spent every day since fighting for policies that could save other families from this grief. Jaime’s Law would simply require background checks for buying ammunition—the same basic safeguard that already applies when buying a gun.

Florida Republicans have made it nearly impossible for this bill to move forward. They've buried it in four separate committees—an unusual hurdle—and haven’t even agreed to debate it. Meanwhile, they're fast-tracking a bill to lower the gun buying age from 21 to 18.

We’re calling on Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez, Senate President Ben Albritton, and the relevant committee chairs to give Jaime’s Law a fair hearing and a floor vote. Let the people’s voice be heard.

This isn’t about politics—it’s about protecting lives. States like New York, Illinois, and California have already passed similar laws. Florida can do the same, especially in memory of the 17 lives taken at Parkland.

Background checks for ammunition won’t solve gun violence alone—but they will stop some of it. They can keep bullets out of the hands of dangerous individuals who shouldn't have them. And they can help honor the memory of children like Jaime, whose lives were cut short by preventable violence.

We can’t fix everything overnight, but we can do more than nothing. We owe it to Jaime—and to every parent, student, and teacher in Florida—to at least try.

Sign this petition to demand Florida lawmakers advance Jaime’s Law now.
