Don't Let Congress Roll Back Gun Background Check Rules

Don't Let Congress Roll Back Gun Background Check Rules
The Issue
The Trump administration just announced it wants to repeal a rule that required thousands of gun dealers to run background checks on buyers at gun shows and other sales outside of traditional stores. This so-called "gun show loophole" has long allowed guns to change hands without any check to make sure the buyer isn't legally banned from owning one. Now, that protection is on the chopping block.
Background checks are one of the most basic tools we have to keep guns away from people who shouldn't have them — people with violent criminal records, domestic abusers, and others prohibited by law. Closing the gun show loophole wasn't a radical idea. It was a commonsense step to make sure the same rules that apply in a gun store also apply at a gun show down the road.
The Justice Department called this rollback the "most comprehensive regulatory reform package in the history" of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), according to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Gun safety advocates see it very differently. "Four days after the nation watched gunfire break out at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, the Trump administration's answer is to gut commonsense gun safety laws," said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety.
We're calling on Congress to block this rollback and protect the background check rule. No loophole should make it easier for dangerous people to get guns. Sign this petition to demand that our leaders put public safety and communities first.
