Don't cut the HND Creative Animation/ Computer Arts and design course!
Don't cut the HND Creative Animation/ Computer Arts and design course!
The Issue
This affects all the students of these courses. The college has stated students in this course will not gain a qualification, lose our year of SAAS funding and become homeless as they refuse to state what they will do to help these students. This course being cut will mean that people loose everything they've been working on and have several projects (units) worth of work with no qualification to speak show. The dean refused to have a follow up email about the meeting aswell. So many students have worked hard for this course and have been completing the units yet we are not being rewarded for this. Instead told to drop out.
Dropping out will negatively impacting us as there may not be a course to come back to. There is no compassion for lecturers and students from management.
This heavily impacts students mental health and their home situations and their families. Students and lecturers need support during strikes but the threat of course cut is greatly affecting students more than the strikes. The college has stated we must not be doing well from the strikes, however we are not doing well due to the threat of our livelihoods placed on us by Higher management.
We cannot stress enough the importance of immediate action because our course is under threat! Please sign but also below can you read some students thoughts and feelings about the news of our course being under threat.
"It being cancelled is also affecting our pathway decisions, like I chose this course with the specific intention of getting more onto my application for the uni course in Dundee for e.g.. The purpose of the course is to expand portfolios for even further education but we cannot achieve that if this is done for."
"This course means so much to me, I am really enjoying it despite the strike impact. If this course gets cut that means I will lose a year of everything. My funding, my time, my efforts and my work. Art is such a big part of my life and seeing courses get impacted purely because its art related hurts me. I have worked so hard in high-school to get to where I am. I am relying on this course to give me a pathway to my future and cancelling the course would impact me greatly for a lot of personal reasons as well. This course and the community around it are amazing and I'm still learning. But shutting the course down will do nothing but cause problems. Let us finish this year and achieve a HNC to allow is to continue to the HND."
"This course is literally my future, I have high school grades and that’s it. It’s the only thing that could possibly get me a job in future. I had a Gap year where I got hired for nothing, I volunteered and couldn’t even get a job there despite having months of experience.
Art is my outlet, my future, my aspiration. Getting kicked out of this course would put me back on claiming benefits, possibly kicked out my home because this is meant to be my track to something."
"It is both upsetting and infuriating to have a course that i have worked hard for, enjoy and feel confident in with lecturers that believe in me and my ability, to be taken away because of something that wasn't my fault and could be fixed with negotiations. So far we have received little to no genuine answers from the people who were supposedly put in place to help us, the only people who have been transparent and honest with us is our lecturers. This class doesn't want false promises or vague answers, we want honesty and transparency about what's going on and how we will be going forward, even if the outcome is bad it would be better for us to have bad but honest news than vague statements sugar-coating what is happening in hopes to settle our anger."
