Don’t Choose a Charlie Kirk Critic to Speak at UVU Graduation

The Issue

Graduation should be a moment that brings students together, not one that deepens division.

Utah Valley University has chosen a commencement speaker whose past public comments about Charlie Kirk have caused real concern among students. For many in this community, especially those still processing the tragedy that took place on this campus, this decision feels out of touch with the moment.

This is not about silencing different viewpoints. Universities should be places where a wide range of ideas can be discussed openly. But a commencement ceremony is not a debate stage. It is a milestone meant to honor graduates, their families, and the journey they have completed together.

At a time like this, students deserve a speaker who reflects unity, respect, and the shared experience of the entire campus community.

Many students feel that inviting someone who publicly criticized Charlie Kirk so soon after his death risks overshadowing what should be a meaningful and unifying event. Regardless of political beliefs, there should be space for respect, especially following a tragedy that affected so many.

This moment calls for leadership that listens.

We are asking Utah Valley University President Astrid S. Tuminez and the university administration to reconsider this decision and select a commencement speaker who can bring people together, honor the significance of this occasion, and respect the full campus community.

Graduation should focus on students, not controversy.

UVU has an opportunity to show that it values unity, respect, and the voices of its students. We urge the university to make a choice that reflects those values.
