“DON'T BULLDOZE MUMBAI's ONLY LUNGS!”

The Issue

Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is Mumbai’s last remaining green lung, a biodiversity hotspot, and the protector of the Tulsi–Vihar water catchment.

Today, this irreplaceable forest is under unprecedented threat.

Recent proposals placed before the Maharashtra Government include:

- Renaming SGNP

- Establishing a university inside the national park

- Developing an integrated township for nearly 500,000 people

- Large‑scale construction and land‑use change inside a protected forest

These proposals are not “development.”

They are a direct assault on Mumbai’s ecological survival.

---

What’s at Risk?

- Destruction of wildlife habitats

- Threat to Mumbai’s water security

- Increase in pollution, traffic, heatwaves, and flooding

- Violations of the Wildlife Protection Act (1972) and Forest Conservation Act (1980)

- Loss of a public natural heritage that belongs to future generations

SGNP is not real estate.

It is a public ecological lifeline.

---

Our Demands

1. Immediate cancellation of all construction, university, township, or renaming proposals inside SGNP.

2. Strengthening of legal protection for the park boundaries.

3. Mandatory exploration of alternative sites outside the national park.

4. Compulsory public consultation before any decision.

5. Declaration of SGNP as a No‑Development Zone to safeguard Mumbai’s future.

---

Conclusion

Any attempt to commercialize or alter SGNP is a breach of public trust and a threat to millions of citizens.

We strongly oppose such proposals and urge the Government of Maharashtra to protect SGNP without compromise.
