The Issue

We call on the UK Government to

guarantee that pupils in British schools are free to learn about and depict Jesus Christ without censorship or restriction.

Reports suggesting that teachers may be discouraged from allowing pupils to draw or depict Jesus Christ in order to avoid causing religious offence are deeply concerning. If true, such guidance would represent a serious double standard within our education system.

Christianity has shaped the history, culture, laws, and identity of the United Kingdom for centuries. The figure of Jesus Christ is central not only to the Christian faith but also to British heritage, art, literature, and education.

Schools should encourage understanding and respect between different faiths, but respect must go both ways. Preventing children from depicting Jesus Christ in their schoolwork risks sending the message that Britain’s own religious and cultural heritage must be hidden or suppressed in order to avoid offence.

Freedom of expression and equal treatment for all religions must be upheld in our schools. Children should not be taught that one religion must be silenced in order to accommodate another.

We therefore call on the

Government and the Department for Education to:

• Clarify whether any guidance exists discouraging pupils from depicting Jesus Christ.
• Guarantee that Christianity will continue to be taught openly and fairly in UK schools.
• Ensure that policies intended to combat religious hatred do not marginalise Christian heritage.

Britain’s history, culture, and faith traditions should not be erased or pushed aside. Schools must remain places where children can learn openly about their country’s heritage without censorship or fear of causing offence.
