Domestic Abuse Suicide Recognition Law
The Issue

Suicides linked to domestic abuse are not formally recognised or recorded in NI.
That means victims may be overlooked, families are left without answers, the true scale of the issue remains unknown and abusers walk free with no repercussions to harm again.
Since 2020, more than 200 people every year have died by suicide in Northern Ireland:
• 2020 — 220
• 2021 — 237
• 2022 — 203
• 2023 — 221
• 2024 — 290
These are not just numbers. They are real people, real lives, and grieving families but how many of these deaths were influenced by domestic abuse?
Right now, we do not know because there is no system in place to identify or record domestic abuse–related suicide.
Domestic abuse is not only physical violence.
It can include:
• Coercive control
• Emotional abuse
• Fear and intimidation
• Isolation and manipulation
For some victims, the impact becomes so severe that it contributes to them taking their own life.
When this happens, victims can disappear within suicide statistics without recognition of the abuse they endured.
Families are left searching for answers, opportunities to learn are missed, and future deaths may not be prevented.
Northern Ireland currently has no clear framework to:
1. Recognise domestic abuse as a contributing factor in suicide
2. Ensure these deaths are properly reviewed or investigated
3. Officially record domestic abuse–related suicides
This campaign is calling for:
✔️ Recognition
✔️ Recording
✔️ Accountability
✔️ Prevention
Because every life matters! Every death deserves recognition and every family deserves answers.
Communications with Justice Minister Naomi Long confirming that there is currently “no system in place to record suicides in this way” have been added to the top of the campaign links for the public to read.
