Domestic abuse affects everyone.

Women. Men. Children. Parents. Brothers. Sisters. Friends. Entire families.

Behind every statistic is a real person. A life changed forever. A family left grieving.

Domestic abuse is not always visible. It can include coercive control, emotional abuse, psychological abuse, stalking, harassment, financial abuse and physical violence. The effects can continue long after the abuse itself has ended and the impact on mental health can be devastating.

The trauma becomes overwhelming and in some cases, it may contribute to suicide.

When a victim is killed by an abusive partner, their death may be recognised as a domestic abuse homicide or femicide.

But what happens when a victim dies by suicide after experiencing domestic abuse?

How are these deaths recognised?

How are they recorded?

How are lessons learned to prevent future tragedies?

Currently, there is no specific system in Northern Ireland for identifying, recording or reviewing suicides where domestic abuse or coercive control may have been a contributing factor.

Communications with Justice Minister Naomi Long confirming that there is currently "no system in place to record suicides in this way" have been added to the campaign links for the public to read.

This means we do not know the true scale of the issue.

Families are left searching for answers.

Victims can become invisible within existing statistics.

Northern Ireland records domestic abuse homicides, but currently does not publish statistics on suicides where domestic abuse may have been a contributing factor.

Who We Are Calling On

  • Justice Minister Naomi Long MLA
  • Department of Justice Northern Ireland
  • Committee for Justice, Northern Ireland Assembly
  • PSNI
  • Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA)
  • Coroners Service Northern Ireland

Opportunities to learn, improve support and prevent future deaths may be missed.

💜 This campaign is calling for:

• Recognition of domestic abuse-related suicide.

• Recording and research to understand the scale of the issue.

• Review processes that identify lessons and opportunities for prevention.

• Greater support for victims, survivors and bereaved families.

This campaign is not about making assumptions about individual deaths.

It is about asking an important question:

If domestic abuse can contribute to suicide, why are we not recognising, recording and learning from these deaths?

Every victim matters.

Every family deserves answers.

No victim should be invisible.

💜 NO MORE INVISIBLE VICTIMS 💜

When domestic abuse leads to suicide, the law must recognise it.

Every signature helps raise awareness, support families and push for change.

We are calling on decision-makers in Northern Ireland to establish a framework for the recognition, recording and review of suicides where domestic abuse or coercive control may have been a contributing factor.

💜 Thank you for your support.
