Dog Breeders Rights - Vets do not check legal owner of pets

The issue

Your dogs microchipped right? It makes you feel "safe'?

The forms say as the "owner" of a dog you must register the microchip and then the microchip needs to be registered with the local council who claim its for returning "your" dog.

My house was broken into and my dog was stolen by a former friend who my dog knew, my dog was taken to a vet who performed artificial insemination and collected semen for freezing then the dog was kept in poor conditions on a Puppy farm. When the puppy farm was abandoned and dogs rescued, I was contacted and issued a fine for my dogs not being confined, then other fees for rescue and Vet treatment. Due to the distance I wasn't able to collect him for a couple of days, when I had made the 10 hour drive I was informed that he had passed away!

Microchips are currently only used for councils to issue fines for stray dogs and to regulate breeding practices. Ethical breeders of Purebred dogs currently have so much red tape and government regulations to abide by which most do, but they have no protection in return!

Every Dog needs to be scanned and checked against the legal owner on the Microchip database to protect the Dog from having any vet procedures without receiving consent from the legal owner who must also be the  registered owner on the microchip.

My dog has a microchip with me as the owner, registered with the council, Pedigree registered to me too, but dog ownership isn't that simple, the fine print says this document doesn't imply ownership.

In fact microchips are scanned at the Vet but not to see who the owner is, only to check if they have a microchip, a potential sale so they can charge you to implant one.

The council registers the dog and its microchip to your address, but they don't care who is has the dog, as long as they are not running the streets, barking, breeding or attacking people.

Sign this petition if you think;

It is a Vet Practice's responsibility to check the person registered on the microchip is the same as the person presenting the dog and to avoid any confrontation this needs to be done in person at least a day beforehand, and then checked again on the day incase they swap dogs, as they can have identical twins too!

Especially if its for breeding purposes, de-sexing, surgery or serious injury or death - that is check the chip.

A dog needs to be scanned and checked at the council before that dog becomes registered to that person.

And that legal ownership of a dog, outright ownership,  is the person named on both the microchip and the council, as an example a car is registered with a registration body and this registration is prof of ownership.
