SAVE THE UK'S WORLD CLASS OVERSEAS AID TO WORLD'S POOREST

The Issue

"Boris Johnson’s surprise announcement this week to parliament that he will fold the Department for International Development (DfID) into the Foreign Office is the wrong decision taken at the wrong time for the wrong reasons. Such a move will hurt the world’s poorest just when the Covid-19 pandemic is predicted to cause soaring levels of poverty, malnutrition and child mortality."     The Guardian

THAT'S WHY THIS PETITION TO DEMAND THAT JOHNSON REVERSE THIS DECISION IS SO IMPORTANT.  PLEASE SIGN, SHARE AND SHARE AGAIN AND AGAIN.

DfID is what made Britain a world leader at emergency and long-term sustainable aid, saving and improving millions of lives for people living in destitution.

Across the world's poorest regions DfID has meant 40 million kids have gone to school.  It means millions of lives have  been saved from malaria, HIV & other killer diseases.

The Government wants to tie our aid to trade or other political imperatives. That is simply not aid, especially when that trade could be things like arms.  Johnson, as an example, argues that we should do more in Europe because it is in our interest to do so, but who will look after the world's poorest?

The aid we give to poorer countries tend to be to those that were originally part of our colonial history. When I worked in overseas aid there was an unwritten agreement between former colonial governments that each will do the same.  But if Britain diverts funds to the Balkans as Johnson has indicated, it will leave a huge gap in development support for communicaties living on the edge of survival in these former colonial countries.

There is a moral obligation that, as one of the world's richest countries and especially one whose wealth was built on colonisation.

DfID is something that our country can be rightly proud of, there to act where need is greatest, using the most appropriate tools to do so.

Most recent Ministers of International Development, including Justine Greening, Rory Stewart and Andrew Mitchell called for the decision to scrap DfID to be reversed. Three previous prime ministers have joined that call, as have leaders of both labour and the conservatives, Kier Starmer and William Hauge.

It's great that those of high office value DfID so much, but the people whose voice can't be heard are the world's poorest which grants from DfID have done so much to benefit.  Please speak up for them  and sign this petition and write to your MP to demand that DfID's is not scrapped to help them work their way out of poverty.

THANK YOU
