The Issue

As someone deeply committed to the field of radiologic technology, I understand firsthand the importance of maintaining high standards for our profession. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) has long been considered the Gold Standard for radiologic technologists, a credential that assures both healthcare providers and patients that an individual meets the rigorous qualifications necessary to provide top-notch care.

For many years, the ARRT has limited graduates to three attempts to pass the certification exam. This policy ensures that only those who possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and preparation receive certification. This is crucial not just for our profession, but also for the credibility and trust we uphold in the healthcare field.

Recently, there have been discussions about increasing the number of attempts beyond three. While this may appear to offer leniency and additional opportunities for graduates, it fundamentally undermines the high standards that radiologic technologists have fought hard to uphold. Allowing too many attempts to pass the exam would indicate a dilution of standards and could lead to a perception that our profession is willing to compromise on the quality of care.

Radiologic technologists are an integral part of the healthcare team. The three-attempt rule is not about limiting opportunities; it is about ensuring every practicing technologist is fully qualified and prepared for the responsibilities of the role.

By increasing the allowable attempts, there could be long-term implications not just for patient safety, but also for the reputation of radiologic technologists as a whole. It is therefore paramount that we advocate for maintaining the current standards as they are set by the ARRT.

Please stand with me in urging the ARRT to keep the three-attempt maximum for the certification exam. We must protect the integrity of our profession and continue to assure our patients and peers that we meet the highest standards.
