An excerpt from the book, Dragnet Nation, by Julia Angwin:
“Conventional wisdom states that kids don’t care about privacy. Adults are constantly telling me that privacy is a generational issue and that kids are perfectly happy living a completely public life. And it’s true that kids have made terrible mistakes in posting dumb things online – sometimes with severe consequences.
Consider, as just one example, eighteen-year-old Justin Carter of Texas, who was arrested for writing a sarcastic comment on his Facebook page. Carter and a friend were arguing about an online video game League of Legends, and Carter’s friend called him crazy. Carter wrote back: “I think I’ma (sic) shoot up a kindergarten and watch the blood of the innocent rain down and eat the beating heart of one of them.” He was arrested and charged with making a terroristic threat. Carter was jailed from February to July 2013 before an anonymous donor posted the $500,000 bail that his family could not afford.”
Every time I read that sentence, I’m blown away that people can’t see that it was clearly a sarcastic comment. My son speaks proper English. The word “I’ma” is a clear indication that he is writing in another voice. Like a cowboy saying, “I’ma gonna shoot that varmint in the street.” Not to mention the context, of his previous comment that he was crazy all right….how can anyone not read the sarcasm in that statement?
Unfortunately, Justin is still out on bond. His case is stuck in limbo with the prosecution refusing to drop the case and my son’s attorneys appealing every decision the judge has made. And in the meantime, my son’s life has been put on pause. Due to his bond conditions he can’t find solid employment, he can’t go to college, and he can’t move on with his life. He couldn’t even celebrate his 21st birthday in the traditional fashion because it is illegal for him to drink while he is out on bond.
When will this nightmare be over for him?
