The Issue

To the Scarsdale School Board and Curriculum Committee:

We, the undersigned parents, guardians, and community members, urgently request a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the current "Reveal Math" curriculum undermining our children's mathematical foundation.

Scientific and Educational Evidence Supporting Our Concerns:

  1. Pedagogical Research Indicators Numerous educational studies demonstrate that constructivist math approaches like Reveal Math can create significant learning gaps, particularly in fundamental computational skills. Research from mathematics education experts suggests that these methodologies often prioritize conceptual exploration over essential skill mastery.
  2. Standardized Performance Metrics Independent analysis of student performance data reveals potential correlations between Reveal Math implementation and declining mathematical proficiency. Comparative assessments show consistent underperformance in computational accuracy and problem-solving efficiency.
  3. Cognitive Development Considerations Young learners require structured, sequential learning environments. The non-linear approach of Reveal Math may disrupt critical neurological pathways for mathematical reasoning and abstract thinking development.

Proposed Action Plan and desired outcomes:

  • Conduct a comprehensive, multi-demographic survey targeting parents, students, and teachers to gather critical insights into the Reveal Math curriculum's effectiveness.
  • Develop sophisticated data collection methods that specifically differentiate between:   a) Students receiving only school-based mathematics instruction
    b) Students obtaining supplemental mathematics education
    c) Students with additional learning support
  • Implement a transparent review process that:  a) Provides clear, data-driven recommendations
    b) Calls for the immediate removal of the Reveal Math curriculum
  • Establish a continuous monitoring framework to ensure ongoing curriculum effectiveness and adaptability, prioritizing student mathematical skill progression and academic success.

Respectfully submitted, Concerned Parents and Community Members of Scarsdale
