Dismantle Christopher Columbus Statues in Tampa and Miami, Florida

The Issue

As a Puerto Rican woman, I trace my roots back to the Taino Indians, an indigenous population that experienced devastation at the hands of Christopher Columbus. These proud people, my ancestors, were killed, enslaved, and their culture largely extinguished, all under the banner of Columbus' colonization missions. The presence of Christopher Columbus' statues in Tampa and Miami, Florida brings constant reminders of our painful history. Across the folklore, writings, and historical records, it is evident that Columbus's explorations led to the mass genocide and extinction of indigenous populations, including the Taino Indians. Given the severity of this historical injustice, the existence of these statues in public spaces is akin to celebrating this disturbing past. Therefore, it is time we reevaluate the symbols we uphold and start healing this historical wound by removing these statues. We, the descendants of those indigenous people, the residents of Tampa and Miami, and advocates for truth, appeal to all with a similar pursuit of justice to lend their support to this cause. Please sign this petition to dismantle the Christopher Columbus statues in Tampa and Miami.

Reasons for Removal

1. Colonial Violence & Genocide – Columbus’ expeditions led to the enslavement, forced labor, and deaths of countless Indigenous people.

2. Myth vs. Reality – Many view the glorification of Columbus as a symbol of European conquest rather than genuine discovery.

3. Indigenous Activism – Native American and Indigenous groups have long protested Columbus Day and his statues, advocating for recognition of the true history.

4. Symbol of White Supremacy – Some argue that the statues have become rallying points for racist ideologies, similar to Confederate monuments.

5. Shift in Historical Recognition – Cities and states have begun recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day, reflecting changing perspectives.
